The 25th Intelligence Squadron is the 2013 recipient of the Director National Security Agency Trophy as the top Air Force cryptologic unit making the most significant contribution to the signal intelligence mission during the preceding year. The Soviet Union detonates a 400 kiloton thermonuclear weapon at the Semipalatinsk Test Site, Kazakhstan, in August 1953. Dubbed Joe-4 by the west, the bomb was significant because it was a deliverable thermonuclear device — a milestone the U.S. would not reach until May 1956. AFTAC Scientists Gather

Dr. Carl Romney (far right), Air Force Technical Applications Center assistant technical director, is pictured with fellow AFTAC personnel (pictured left to right): Walter Singlevich, Gerald M. Leies and Doyle Northrup at an undetermined event in 1970. Northrup served as a technical director from July 1959 to 1972; Leies followed Northrup as technical director in 1974 until 1987 when the position was abolished. He later became AFTAC’s first chief scientist until his retirement in 1988.
